Xiaomi has reached another milestone by shipping over ten million smartphone units in the month of September. CEO Lei Jun announced the new achievement alongside acknowledging tight supply of some of the company's most demanding models.

"We have good news to share to share: More than ten million Xiaomi phones were shipped in September, making the first time in our history we have crossed ten million units in a single month! This means our business has achieved a new level," said Jun in a post on Chinese social media network Weibo.

While Xiaomi is yet to become a mainstream brand in developed markets such as the US and UK, the Beijing-headquartered company has a strong presence across Asian regions, including China, India and Singapore. The company has surpassed domestic players like Karbonn and Micromax in the Indian market due to its highly affordable handsets. Last month, the Chinese contender even partnered with Google to bring its Android One initiative back to action and launched the Mi A1 as its first device with pure Android experience.

Strong presence in India since its debut

Xiaomi debuted in India back in July 2014, and in the tenure of just around three years, it sold over 25 million smartphone units. The company, led by vice president Manu Kumar Jain, sells its Redmi and Mi series handsets. Lately, it shifted from online-only sales model to an offline-online mix. The Jain-led team is also establishing Mi Home experience stores to bolster its existence in brick and mortar.

Fifth largest vendor

The success from India helped Xiaomi move back into the list of top five worldwide smartphone vendors in August. According to IDC, the company resulted in a year-over-year growth of 58.9 percent by shipping 21.2 million smartphones in the second quarter of 2017 and capturing a market share of 6.2 percent.

Going forward, Xiaomi is set to take on matured competitors and market leaders such as Apple and Samsung. The company recently launched its bezel-less Mi Mix 2 that is aimed to rival the upcoming iPhone X and the newly unveiled Galaxy Note 8. Furthermore, it recently joined the Wireless Power Consortium to bring Qi standard-based wireless charging support to its next smartphone range.
