Australian PM Malcolm Turnbull calls Melbourne siege shocking and cowardly terrorist act

Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull said on Tuesday (6 June) that police were treating a deadly siege in the southern city of Melbourne as an act of terrorism in which a gunman was killed. The Islamic State (Isis) militant group has claimed responsibility for the attack, saying the gunman was one of its soldiers. A day earlier, on Monday, the attacker, identified as Yacqub Khayre, 29, held a woman hostage inside an apartment building in Melbourne. While the hostage was rescued unharmed, three police officers suffered injuries when they engaged in a firefight with Khayre. The attacker was shot dead by police. A man was found dead in the foyer of the building where Khayre held the woman against her will. Jun 6, 2017

Sadiq Khan says Londons police is underfunded and takes dig at Donald Trump

Mayor of London Sadiq Khan and Metropolitan Police Commissioner Cressida Dick visited the scene of the attack on London Bridge and addressed the media on June 5. Khan says he thinks that they are not receiving the sort of funding they need as a capital city. The Mayor also took a sly dig at US President Donald Trump when talking about state visits, making the point that they have to protect the vistis, even if some guests are less welcome.  Jun 6, 2017

British Prime Minister Theresa May said on 5 June that the leader of the opposition Labour party, Jeremy Corbyn, would not keep Britain safe if he were to win the UK general election on 8 June. Commenting on his defence policies at a campaign speech in central London, the prime minister said that is not leadership, its an abdication of leadership. Video footage of a British man wielding a large machete and what he claims is a grenade threatening to blow up mosques and stab Muslims surfaced online in the aftermath of the London Bridge terror attack.
