Girl group TWICE bagged the Song of the Year on the second day of the Mnet Asian Music Awards (MAMA) held in Japan on November 29.
TWICE won the daesang or grand prize, for their song "Signal," the second consecutive year that they took home the award.
"We know we have far to go and a lot to do, but we're so grateful for being given many awards, and this great award," said Jihyo.
Wanna One won the best new male artist while Pristin took home the best new female artist award. Kim Chung Ha received the best of next award.
TWICE and Seventeen won the best dance performance while Monsta X grabbed the best concert performer trophy.
Boy band NU'EST W bagged the discovery of the year award while EXO claimed the MWave Global Fans' Choice and EXO-CBX won the Best Asian Style in Japan. Block B's Zico won the best male artist award.
But Korean netizens are criticizing some of the winners including Pristin which won over singer Chung Ha and TWICE winning song of the year.
"More than anything, it was so wrong to give the rookie award to Pristin instead of Chungha who had way higher votes and charted better digitally. It's not like Chungha didn't attend, she was right there and yet the award went to Pristin, who flopped completely on the charts," one commented.
Another said, "MAMA was so bad this year no standards, nothing fair about it making up unnecessary awards to just hand out what was the point of voting at all."
"'Signal' winning daesang???? Weird... surely you mean popularity award," one netizen wrote.
Others defended TWICE, saying, "Congratulations on daesang Twice," "Congratulations on Twice for being the first group to win song of the year twice in a row" and "Congratulations on daesang Twice~!"
