The most anticipated smartphone of the year, Apple's upcoming iPhone is going to be called the iPhone X and not iPhone 8, suggests a recent iOS 11 firmware leak by the tech giant. The pieces of information gathered from the mobile operating system leak, first noted by 9to5Mac, show that Apple is expected to unveil their new iPhones on September 12 and they are iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, and iPhone X. App and game developer Steven Troughton-Smith discovered the names in the software leak and he tweeted about it.
Maaaybe the DeviceTree is lying about the marketing name, maybe not. But right now, D22 thinks it is iPhone X, so that's good enough for me

The "X" in the name of the iPhone might be a reference to this model being the special 10th-anniversary iPhone edition. The new devices will be unveiled at a launch event on September 12 in Cupertino, California.

The leak comes just after Apple accidentally published early HomePod speaker software, which also disclosed several details about the upcoming iPhone. Apple chief executive officer Tim Cook has criticized reportage regarding the upcoming iPhones this year, saying those articles have reduced sales of current models. However, expectations quite high, as a recent survey, by RBC Capital Markets, has revealed that almost two-thirds of respondents said they would buy a new iPhone model sight unseen.
The leaked iOS 11 firmware supports earlier reports by Bloomberg News, which pointed out that the premium iPhone X device will replace the usual Touch ID fingerprint scanner with a face unlock feature. The leak confirms that Apple will call this technology Face ID. The new iPhone X will also have another interesting feature called Animoji or animated, 3D emojis, in which people's facial expressions would be turned into expressive emoticons, noted the leaked codes, as per 9to5Mac.
