It looks like nothing can really stop Gong Yoo's Goblin. Each and every episode of this drama is truly getting better and interesting. Now, it looks like the fantasy drama is all set to beat the records set by 'Reply 1988,' which holds the highest tv rating of all tvN drama.

According to AllKPop, "The latest episode of the trending drama aired on January 6 recorded average viewer ratings of 15% and the highest of 17.2%. This is also a 1.8% increase from last week's highest viewer ratings." The ratings are revealed by Nielsen Korea. Now, the number shows that Goblin is just 1.4% away from beating the record set by 'Reply 1988,' which has a rating of 18.6%. With just five episodes to go, it would be really interesting to see whether Goblin can create a new record.

Also known as Guardian: The Lonely and Great God, the series narrates the story of Joseon warrior Kim Shin and his curse for an eternal life. To break the 900-year old quest, he needs the help of a human bride Ji Eun Tak. The perfectly timed supernatural romance and the mysterious past are definitely making the fans crazy. During its debut week, Goblin reached 302.8 points and even dethroned Lee Min Ho's "Legend of the Blue Sea."

However, though the drama is highly popular, it has also invited many controversies ever since the launch—sometimes for the age difference between the lead characters, or the pedophile angle or the depressing life of its female lead. A drama review posted on Korea Herald states, "Given the distressing life story of its female lead Eun Tak (Kim) where the immortal Shin (Gong) came to her rescue and gave her a comfortable life, some critics identified the drama's "Cinderella" concept as dated." Viewers have also expressed frustration over the number of product placements in the drama.

But despite all the negative vibe reported in the media, the drama is definitely going strong and the ratings are on a rapid increase. It has also attracted a big sect of international viewers. "Goblin" airs every Friday and Saturday on tvN.
