Several iOS 10 users have been affected with the notification alert issue wherein certain messaging apps like WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger are unable to play custom alert sounds for incoming notifications and instead the software reverts back to the default Tri-tone sound. The issue seems to be device independent as it has been confirmed on various iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch models that support the iOS 10 update.
Although affected iOS 10 users have blamed third-party messaging apps for the occurrence of this issue, the WhatsApp and Facebook developers have clarified that the issue is due to an inherent bug in iOS 10 and not an issue with their app.
Meanwhile, veterans of the iOS community have confirmed that hard-rebooting the device is the only viable workaround for this issue. Apple is already testing the iOS 10.1 update and it seems that a fix for is just around the corner.
Hard-Reboot iPhone 7
iPhone 7 and 7 Plus users can perform a hard-reboot of their device as follows:
- Press and hold Power and Volume Down buttons together, until the device reboots itself to the Apple logo screen.
- At this moment, release both the buttons to hard-reboot into the home screen.
Hard-Reboot older devices
On the contrary, an older device such as the iPhone 6s or iPhone 5 can be hard-rebooted as follows:
- Press and hold the Power and Home/Touch ID buttons together for at least 10 seconds or until the device hard-reboots into the iconic Apple logo screen.
- Release both the buttons when you see the Apple logo and you are all set.
