Netflix is gearing up for its biggest science fiction show in 2018 which is all set to blow viewers' minds. The series, Altered Carbon, is based on Richard K. Morgan's 2002 novel. The teaser trailer for the show has been released, with an airing date of February 2, 2018.
The show has been written and produced by Laeta Kalogridis and its pilot episode has been directed by Miguel Sapochnik of Game of Thrones fame. The plot of the series is set 300 years in the future, when death is no longer permanent and humans can be resurrected through their stored consciousness in digital implants, making them capable of body upgradation and virtual immortality.
The caption for the teaser trailer states, "Based on the award-winning novel, Altered Carbon takes place in a future where the human mind can now be digitized and downloaded into a "cortical stack" and placed into new bodies, called sleeves."
Altered Carbon stars Will Yun Lee, Dichen Lachman, Joel Kinnaman, James Purefoy, Renee Elise Goldsberry, Martha Higareda, etc. The protagonist Takeshi Kovacs (Joel Kinnaman) is an elite soldier who becomes a revolutionary. He is imprisoned, his consciousness stored and awoken centuries later by a wealthy mogul to solve a murder case. Other characters include interstellar warriors, detectives and so on.
Produced by Skydance Televisions, this show had been conceptualised as a feature film by Kalogridis about 15 years ago, reports Entertainment Weekly. Her wish was finally fulfilled by Netflix which took a chance with this show, which looks grander than any other sci-fi show aired so far.
"It's very different than what else is out in this space," Kalogridis says. "There's some Philip K. Dick in there, William Gibson, obviously Ridley Scott, and actually some Orson Welles and John Huston. We tried to imagine what a potential globalized future on Earth would look like, with a certain amount of technological change, a certain amount of technological familiarity and a very large degree of human familiarity," reports EW.
The show will have ten episodes in its first season.
