Former fitness trainer turned actor, Ma Dong-seok played a memorable role as a brave, caring husband in the worldwide sleeper hit zombie movie, 'Train to Busan.' Having fought the undead with Gong Yoo, the actor now wants to try out a romantic role.

As noted by Allkpop, Ma Dong-seok appeared in the recent episode of SBS variety show, 'Yang Se-hyung's Shorterview.' It is here that he expressed his desire to try a romantic comedy. "Romantic comedy and romance (in general) are very charming. I would like to play a role of someone who has a big crush on another," the 46-year-old actor said.

The interview was taken in a set that looked like a police station; similar to the police station set featured in the actor's latest movie, 'The Outlaws,' directed by Yoon-Seong-kang. The movie is a crime-action vehicle, which is reportedly based on the 2007 "Heuksapa Incident."

The story involves a turf war between a South Korean gang who controlled the Garibong-dong neighbourhood in Seoul and the Heuksapa gang from Yanbian, China. The police are asked to intervene and bring about a resolution to the conflict. Ma Dong-seok plays police officer Ma Seok-do.

In an interview with The Korea Times, published on October 1, Ma Dong-seok revealed, "I've always wanted to become a police officer and now that I've become an actor, I wanted to play the role. I wanted to make crime action movies rather than a detective series. Director Kang wrote the scenario and I only helped him by sharing stories and researched that I did."

He added, "I poured out many of my ideas into this film from doing research for the scenarios and meeting with close police officers to hear their actual combat experience with gangs. I also showed my knowhow and combat skills that I learned as a fighter. I was a boxer when I was a middle school student."

About 'The Outlaws,' Ma Dong-seok said, "'The Outlaws' shows wild action scenes. We wanted to avoid talking about one character's personal history and his issues with family, which could make the story boring. Kang and I wanted to push this film with strong and simple scenes. The story constitution is simple. It's Ma Seok-do versus Jang Chen. And there is humour in-between to entertain viewers in a movie containing brutal fight scenes."

Ma Dong-seok, whose actual name is Lee Dong-seok, also said he hates scenes that have violence and blood everywhere. He prefers comedy and action instead. So, despite 'The Outlaws' being a crime action genre movie, certain violent scenes have been blotted out.

'The Outlaws' has released in South Korea on October 3.
