Big Bang's Taeyang has been appointed as ambassador of the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics.
"We have appointed Big Bang's Taeyang as a public relations ambassador," according to the Winter Olympic Games organizers.
Taeyang is scheduled to attend the official appointment ceremony on Wednesday at the Foreign Press Club at the Korea Press Center in Seoul.
His appointment is aimed at drumming up public support for PyeongChang Olympics, which will be held from February 8-25, 2018 in PyeongChang in Gangwon Province, South Korea.
The 29-year-old singer is the latest addition to a roster of Korean celebrities who have been named ambassadors of the Winter Olympics.
They include soprano Sumi Jo, actor Kim Woo Bin, Oe-su Lee, actor Lee Min Ho, ballet dancer Sue-jin Kang, and Olympic champions Kim Yuna, Lindsey Vonn, Tae-bum Mo, Seung-hi Park and Seung-hoon Lee.
Majority of Koreans are positive that the PyeongChang Olympics will be successful.
In a survey conducted by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism among 1,000 respondents on May 26 and 27, 62.9 percent said the Winter Olympics will be successful, a 7.8 percent increase from the same survey held in April.
A total of 40.3 percent said they are interested in the Olympics.
In addition, 69.7 percent said Korea's new government under President Moon Jae-in will have a positive effect on the country's hosting of the PyeongChang Olympics, according to the Korea Times.
Among the respondents, 61.8 percent said public interest is the most important factor for the Winter Olympics to succeed while 17.9 percent said it's infrastructure.
The survey also showed that among the respondents, 8.9 percent said they would go and see the games and among the individual events, 39 percent are interested in short track events, 31.4 percent in the opening ceremony, 29.8 percent in ski jumping and 26.6 percent in figure skating.
