Floods and landslides have killed at least 50 people and left another 27 missing after a tropical depression hit Vietnam just days before the region is due to host the APEC summit of Asia-Pacific leaders. The communist state's Steering Committee for Disaster Prevention said that 2,000 houses had collapsed entirely in a trail of destruction that has forced the evacuation of more than 30,000 people.
On Saturday, Typhoon Damrey, the 12th major storm to hit Vietnam this year, made landfallwith winds of up to 90 km/h (56 mph) that damaged more than 80,000 homes, knocked down electricity poles and uprooted trees. In addition to this, heavy rainfall and high winds lashed the coastal strip on Sunday.
The national disaster agency forecast that rain would last until Tuesday and that flooding could worsen the situation. According to reports, battle tanks were mobilized to help with rescue efforts in Nha Trang, which bore the brunt of the typhoon.
According to the government, more than 40,000 hectares of crops had been damaged, including sugar cane, rice fields and rubber plantations. Last month, more than 80 people were killed in northern Vietnam floods while a typhoon wreaked havoc in central provinces in September. In this gallery, IBTimes Singapore has compiled a series of images that will give a clear picture of the present situation in Vietnam.
