Google has an obsession with big smartphone models and fish-based smartphone codenames. Until the Goggle Nexus 6P, every Google smartphone was bigger than the previous one and now, that trend is allegedly coming back. The latest leaks show that new Pixel 2 is potentially going to be massive in size.
Earlier reports said that Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL are being developed under codenames 'muskie' and 'walleye' respectively. Now, Droid Life has reported, they have confirmed "via multiple sources" that other than Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL, there is a third Pixel that is being developed under the codename, "taimen" and the name tells a lot.
Google's bizarre obsession about fish codenames is not out of the context. Dimensions of each fish play a major role, as you can see in this chart by Forbes:
- 2012 - 4.7-inch Nexus 4 (Mako)
- 2013 - 5-inch Nexus 5 (Hammerhead)
- 2014 - 6-inch Nexus 6 (Shamu)
- 2015 - 5.2-inch Nexus 5X (Bullhead), 5.7-inch Nexus 6P (Anger)
- 2016 - 5.1-inch Pixel (Sailfish), 5.5-inch Pixel XL (Marlin)
For those, who might not be familiar with this fishes, muskies are significantly larger than walleyes. While muskies weigh around 17 kgs walleyes are of 11 kgs. But taimens are truly enormous, which can weigh over 100 kgs.
As we can see that the size of the fish reflects the size of the phone, taimen's size strongly indicates that the third Pixel phone is going to be a giant one. Google is set to create a Pixel XXL monster, says Forbes.
Also considering the dramatically huge size of taimen, e, which the company kind of avoided following the poor performance of 8.9-inch Nexus 9 in the market.
Perhaps, taimen can also be the follow-up of the 2015 10.2-inch Pixel C hybrid.
Either way codename history suggests that Google is planning something really big for the Pixel brand, only time will tell what exactly this device is going to be.
