iPhone 8 to come with flexible OLED display with pressure-sensitive 3D Touch feature

Apple's upcoming flagship phone 'iPhone 8' is expected to feature the highly-rumoured OLED display with new pressure-sensitive 3D Touch functionality, according to KGI Securities Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. The flexible OLED display panel will have curves on the sides of the handset, which warrants a change with the design implementation of 3D Touch as curved display requires higher pressure-sensitivity.

Consequently, the curved display will be revamped to incorporate a thin film sensor instead of FBCB sensor and thereby support a wider range of 3D Touch pressure levels for enhanced touch sensitivity and higher accuracy.

Furthermore, Kuo points out that the fragile nature of the OLED panels could prompt the use of some metal reinforcements around the 3D Touch area. However, it is not yet known if the metal construction would be placed internally or externally.

Some of the noteworthy features debuting with the iPhone 8 include wireless charging, new Touch ID and facial recognition software, and improved waterproofing capability.
