Overview
Son Wan Ho takes on Lee Hyun II in an all-Korean semi-final of the 2016 Denmark Open at the Odense Sports Park on 22 October.
Veteran shuttler Lee Hyun has found it difficult to get past his compatriot in their previous two meetings this year. At the Japan Open last month, he was crushed by Son in 13-21, 8-21 as early as in the second round of the competition.
Korean Open 2016 saw the similar foes pitted against each other in the semi-final, in which Lee Hyun once again went down to Son despite taking the match to the decider.
However, in the ongoing tournament Lee Hyun has looked composed and has overcome testing situations in the previous encounters. In the first round, the 36-year-old saw off a stiff challenge from Taiwan's Wei Wang Tzu even after dropping the first game.
In the second round, Lee Hyun faced his biggest test of the tournament against second seed local favourite Viktor Axelsen. Once again after dropping the first game, the veteran came up with a strong comeback to see off the challenge from the Rio Olympics Men's singles bronze-medallist.
The quarter-final, which followed a similar pattern, saw the South Korean beating Hong Kong's Wing Ki Vincent 2-1.
However, Lee Hyun cannot afford to let go off steam as it will be difficult for him to make a comeback against Son, who has been consistent in the ongoing season.
Son came close to winning the Korea Open at home but failed to go past the final hurdle as he suffered a 1-2 loss to China's Qiao Bin in the final. At the Japan Open, he succumbed to straight-games defeat in the semi-final against Danish shuttler Jan O Jorgensen.
The 28-year-old suffered similar exits after reaching the final stages at India Open and Singapore Open earlier this year. However, the ongoing tournament will be Son's best chance to claim a Superseries title as he is the only seeded player remaining in the Men's singles event after French shuttler Brice Leverdez took out top seed Lee Chong Wei on Friday.
