Overview
Australia host New Zealand in the first of the three-match Chappell-Hadlee One Day International series in Sydney on 4 December.
The hosts head into the series after an array of disappointing results against South Africa. They were whitewashed for the first time in their history in a five-match ODI series by the Proteas earlier this year before they were beaten 2-1 at home by Faf du Plessis-led team.
Skipper Steve Smith and coach Darren Lehmann have come under considerable pressure after not being able to produce the right results. However, the number one ODI team will be boosted by the return of Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood, both of whom did not tour South Africa.
Apart from the likes of David Warner and Smith at the top of the order, the Australians also have all-rounders James Faulkner, Mitchell Marsh and Glenn Maxwell, who are making a comeback into the ODI series.
On the other hand, New Zealand have landed in Australia after a convincing 2-0 thrashing of Pakistan in Tests. Kane Williamson's men will be eager to retain the Chappell-Hadlee trophy, which they won by beating the Australians at home earlier this year.
New Zealand will miss a few of their key players in Ross Taylor, Mitchell McClenaghan and Matt Henry, all of whom are yet to recover from their injuries. However, the Black Caps will have Colin deGrandhome, who had an impressive outing in his maiden Test series last month against Pakistan.
Tom Latham's recent batting form should boost the confidence of his skipper, who is expected to lead the unit from the front with the bat. Also, New Zealand are set to unleash their new pacer Lockie Ferguson, who has shown the ability to be consistently reaching the 140kph mark and occasionally clocking more than 150kph in Sydney.
While it will be a crucial series for the struggling Australian team, a 3-0 win here would make Williamson's side the number one in the 50-over format.
