Overview
After an eventful Australian Open and action-packed ATP tournament in Montpellier, tennis action resumes at The Netherlands. Top stars Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer, Andy Murray and Rafael Nadal are missing from the action but the Rotterdam Open will see a lot of upcoming stars battling for title.
With Nadal and Stanislas Wawrinka pulling out of the tournament in the last minute, Marin Cilic is now the top seed at the ATP World Tour - 500 Series event, starting Monday. The world number seven has not started his season well with first-round exits at Chennai Open and Montpellier and a Round of 64 upset at the Australian Open. The Croatian player will have a lot to prove and the pressure to perform as the top seed will be riding high on his shoulders.
The week-long tournament also has Dominic Thiem (second seed) and David Goffin (third seed) both of whom met at the Australian Open with the latter beating the former to reach the quarter-final. Tomas Berdych (4), Grigor Dimitrov (5), Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (6), Mischa Zverev and Alexander Zverev are also among the ones to watch out for in the tournament.
However, all eyes will be on Dimitrov, who had a stitched a 10-match unbeaten run in Australia earlier this year before being stopped by Rafael Nadal in the semi-final of the Australian Open. The Bulgarian is favourite to win the tournament but he will have to be wary as he faces Andy-Murray slayer Mischa in the first round on Monday.
German teenager Alexander, who impressed with his showing in Melbourne, is also in good form after defeating Tsonga in the semi-final enroute to a title win by defeating Richard Gasquet in the final at Montpellier.
