The civic plans to develop the central and eastern parts of the Jurong Lake Gardens (JLG) were unveiled at an exhibition launched by the National Parks Board on Saturday. The project will create new community spaces and gardens featuring unique tropical flora providing an eye soothing view.
Minister for National Development Lawrence Wong announced the plans at the exhibition held in the Canopy @ J Link in Jurong East. It was open for the members of the public to share their feedback regarding the plans.
The authorities are also planning to develop aquatic gardens consisting of ponds, water terraces and stream for the enjoyment of the Jurong residents.
According to reports, the plan will also feature unique concepts like an edible show garden and a hanging bonsai garden where tropical bonsais are suspended in mid-air. The fruits and vegetables which will be produced in show garden will be served in a restaurant.
Local architectural firm Liu & Woo Architects proposed these innovative designs. The firm, which was awarded the design consultancy tender in October, said that while planning the designs, it considered the need to preserve nature by retaining the existing biodiversity hotspots.
The plan also includes a "waterwall" court which will be surrounded by a three-metre high waterfall on three sides.
The JLG central area, consisting the Chinese and Japanese Gardens, will feature tropical horticultural gardens. The authorities have planned to create spaces near it for park users to rest and enjoy the nature. On the other hand, the eastern area will have a waterfront promenade fronting the future Science Centre.
A water gallery trail is also included in the proposed plan where boats can travel along the banks of the lake surrounded by a swamp forest.
At present, the JLG west is under development and is targeted to be completed by 2018. The development work in the JLG central and east will commence after the western part is completed. The National Parks Board expects the project to be progressively completed from 2020.
