Overview
Andy Murray will take on Novak Djokovic in the title match of 2016 ATP World Tour Finals in London on 20 November. The winner of the clash on Sunday will also walk away with the year-ending number one spot.
The current world number one defeated Canada's Milos Raonic 5-7, 7-6 (7-5), 7-6 (11-9) in a draining semi-final battle that lasted three hours and 38 minutes, which is also the tournament record for the longest match.
The Brit also stitched his longest unbeaten record of 23 matches with the win on Saturday.
Murray has spent nine hours and 54 minutes on the pitch over the four matches he has played so far in the tournament. He also played a marathon in the last group stage match against Kei Nishikori, which extended for three hours and 20 minutes on Tuesday.
Murray, who displaced Djokovic from the top spot of the ATP rankings earlier this month, would want to finish the year as the number one-ranked player but is facing serious threat from Djokovic, who is looking focussed after having mixed results in the recent past.
The Serb made light work of Japan's Kei Nishikori in his semi-final on Saturday and has almost spent three hours lesser on the court than Murray in the ongoing tournament.
A lot will depend on how Murray holds up, after playing draining encounters over the group stages and the semi-final on Saturday.
"Sunday is the last day for a while, we get a break after that. I'll just give my best of what I've got. Hopefully it's enough," Murray said, as quoted by the BBC.
The two players last met in the final of the Roland Garros, in which Djokovic outclassed Murray in a four-setter. While the Brit has won only one of their four clashes in 2016, he has been on top of his game since his gold medal-winning campaign at the Rio Olympics in August.
While Djokovic, who is relatively fresh, will fancy his chances, Murray, who will rallied by a strong home support, will look to cling on to his top spot with a win on Sunday.
