Overview
Tai Tzu Ying takes on Cheung Ngan Yi in the in the semi-final of the 2016 Denmark Open at the Odense Sports Park on 22 October.
The Taiwanese youngster overcame a tough battle against fourth-seed Sung Hyun JI in the quarter-final. The fifth seed conceded the first game 12-21 and looked no match for her South Korean opponent.
In the second game, both the shuttlers were involved in a see-saw battle which ended in favour of the 22-year-old 25-23. The Taiwan shuttler was tested again in the decider, which she clinched 23-21 to win the quarter-final match that was played for an hour and five minutes.
Ying will take a lot of positives from the hard-fought battle, which came her way at the right time after straight-games victories in the first and second round. A possible clash against Spanish sensation Carolina Marin awaits the shuttler in the title clash on Sunday.
The promising youngster has been rising up the badminton ladder and has already won two titles in 2016, which includes the Indonesia Open Super Series, in which she defeated top Chinese shuttler Wang Yihan and Li Xuerui.
She would also want to make amends for her first round exit in the Women's singles event in Rio Olympics. A win in Denmark will be an ideal result for Ying. However, she will have to overcome 23-year-old Cheung to give herself a chance to have a shot at glory.
Cheung has been inconsistent in the ongoing season, but she has been at her dominant best in Denmark. She has stormed past all her opponents so far with straight-games wins, which includes her quarter-final win against Japan's Sayaka Sato, who defeated Rio Olympic silver-medalist PV Sindhu.
Saturday's semi-final clash will be a tough one for Cheung but she would want to improve her records against Ying, against whom the Hong Kong shuttler has never registered a win.
