A 19-year-old man was arrested on Friday for stealing motorcycles in a series of theft cases in areas such as Clementi, Jurong, Marsiling and Yishun in Singapore, the police said. This comes as the second arrest in such case after two people were arrested in such cases last month.

According to reports, a motorcycle was stolen from the open air carpark at Block 247, Yishun Avenue 9 on Tuesday. The authorities conducted an investigation after receiving a police report and arrested the suspect on Friday around 5.30 pm near Yishun Avenue 11.

The teenager is expected to be involved in several other cases of motorcycle thefts as well. If convicted, the suspect can be jailed for up to seven years along with a fine.

Last month, a 41-year-old man was arrested for stealing a motorcycle in Tampines while another 19-year-old man was arrested for trying to steal a motorcycle in Yishun. Reports said that when the latter was stopped by a resident he fled. Later, he was identified and arrested.

The police have asked motorcycle owners to be very careful about such incidents and have urged them to park their motorcycles in well-lit areas as crime prevention measures. They have also asked the motorcycle owners to install an anti-theft alarm for their motorcycle and they should use a motorcycle canvas to cover the motorcycle, securing both ends.

The motorcycle owners should use additional locking devices such as disc brake locks or install a suspension guard. Additionally, one should always remove the ignition key and lock the motorcycle, whenever it is left unattended.
