Preview
Chelsea have made a strong start to their champions League campaign this season, with a 2-1 comeback win at Atletico Madrid has given Antonio Conte's men the impetus for a top two finish and qualification for the knockout stages. Three points at home to Roma on Wednesday would hand them a commanding grip on the group.
But Chelsea have struggled to hit the heights they reached in Spain in the Premier League, where they have lost against both leaders Manchester City and most recently to bottom side Crystal Palace on Saturday. They had also lost their opening game of the Premier League season at Stamford Bridge to Burnley.
Roma are also unbeaten in their first two games of the group stage but were forced to settle for a 0-0 home draw against Atletico in the opening round of fixtures. And while Chelsea may have been struggling over recent weeks the Gialorossi will travel to London battered and bruised after a 1-0 home defeat to Serie A leaders Napoli.
Team News
Chelsea will be without central midfielder N'Golo Kante, sidelined for three weeks with a hamstring injury, and are unlikely to have Danny Drinkwater back from a calf strain.
Victor Moses limped off with a hamstring problem of his own in the first half of Saturday's 2-1 loss at Crystal Palace.
However Alvaro Morata could return to add to Antonio Conte's striking options after returning to training on Sunday.
Antonio Rudiger will hope to feature against his former side, who might be grateful for his services after losing Kostas Manolas to injury in Saturday's loss at Napoli.
Patrik Schick, Gregoire Defrel, Emerson Palmieri, Kevin Strootman and Stephan El Shaarawy are further doubts for the Italians, though the latter pair could be available for Roma manager Eusebio Di Francesco.
Predicted line-ups
Chelsea starting XI: Courtois; Cahill, Luiz, Azpilicueta; Zappacosta, Fabregas, Bakayoko, Alonso; Pedro, Hazard, Morata
Roma starting XI: Alisson; Bruno Peres, Juan Jesus, Fazio, Kolarov; De Rossi, Strootman, Nainggolan; Florenzi, Perotti, Dzeko
Head to head
Chelsea and Roma have met just four times before, most recently in the group stage of the Champions League nine years ago.
The Blues won the home game 1-0, with John Terry on the scoresheet, before losing 3-1 at the Stadio Olimpico with Terry scoring again.
