Thousands participate in #MeToo rally in Hollywood

Time magazine has named not Donalad Trump but "the Silence Breakers" as its Person of the Year for 2017, referring to those women, and the global conversation they have started after openly coming forward to tell their own stories of sexual harassment using the #MeToo social media hashtag.

This year's shortlist of candidates for TIME's 2017 Person of the Year included Jeff Bezos, CEO of Amazon, The Dreamers, undocumented immigrants who were brought to the U.S. as children, Hollywood director Patty Jenkins, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick, The #MeToo movement formed in the wake of Weinstein scandal, Special counsel Robert Mueller, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping. In 2016, then US President-elect Trump was made Person of the Year.

Though the popular vote polled by TIME readers went to Mohammed bin Salman, the crown prince of Saudi Arabia, the group chosen by the TIME Editors usually emergeds the ultimate winner of the age-old honor that pushes the person to the cover page of the next issue.

In vogue since 1927, TIME has identified the Person of the Year as the most influential person in the past one year, for better or for worse. Those honored in recent years included Hillary Clinton, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, Russian President Vladimir Putin, Black Lives Matter activists, CRISPR scientists and singer Beyoncé.
