Overview

Sun Yu heads into the first semi-final of the Women's singles category after having won all her group stage matches. The 22-year-old began her campaign by making light work of reigning Olympic champion Carolina Marin in straight games.

Sun followed it up by avenging her China Open final defeat to PV Sindhu by taming the Indian shuttler 21-15, 21-17 in her second group game. On Friday, despite losing her first game against Akane Yamaguchi, the Chinese shuttler came back from behind to take the match 15-21, 21-10, 21-10.

The tough test against Yamaguchi has come in the right time for Sun, who was having it easy in her first two matches. Sun, in fact, strolled past her opponent in the third game after grabbing a 10-0 lead. The third seed, who has reached four Superseries finals in 2016 without being able to cross the ultimate hurdle, will face Tai Tzu Ying on Saturday.

Tai, the newly-crowned world number one, made sure she eased past the group stages with straight games wins against He Bingjiao and Ratchanok Intanon before she slipped in her final group game against South Korea's Sung Ji Hyun.

The top seed, who has won two Superseries tournaments in 2016, has had a good run in the recent past and is fresh from success at the Hong Kong Open. The Taiwanese shuttler is two wins away from finishing her dream year on a high.

It will be a stiff test against Sun in the semi-final but Tai showed what she can do to big names in big clashes with a superlative performances in Hong Kong when she blew away PV Sindhu in the final.
