A 17-year-old boy has been arrested on Sunday for allegedly vandalising several Singapore flags and vehicle emblems at a residential estates in Tanjong Katong since July, Singapore police said on Tuesday.
The residents of Parkstone Drive, Goodman Road and Crescent Road complained to the police about such the incidents. The flags that hung outside their houses or the emblems of vehicles parked along the road were damaged.
The police said the investigations are going on.
If the boy is convicted, he might be jailed for up to three years or fined up to S$2,000 and caned between three and eight times.
Arlene Alegre-Wood, one of the residents said she felt very upset by the incident.
"It's having no respect for a country where the citizens have so much national pride," she told TODAY Online
"When I was a kid, nobody would ever dare to do that," she added.
Another resident, Judy Lui, said a figure dressed in black was seen removing the national flag at 1am in their CCTV footage.
Similar incidents were noticed in several other households in the area, some flags were removed while some were thrown in dustbins and drains.
