New Zealand have given themselves a good chance to regain the Chappell-Hadlee trophy which they conceded to Australia late last year after losing a three-match One Day International series 3-0 on the road.
The Black Caps survived by five runs in a thrilling contest at the Eden Park in Auckland on Monday. Martin Guptill (61) and Neil Broom (73) starred with the bat as the hosts posted 286 runs on the board. Not to forget Trent Boult's 7-ball 16, which proved crucial in the end.
In reply, Australia were pegged back early by Tim Southee and Boult and Aaron Finch's men were reeling at 6/67 at one stage before Marcus Stoinis, who had picked up three wickets with the ball earlier in the day, struck an unbeaten 146 only to see his partner, number 11 Josh Hazlewood, getting run out at the other end with only six runs needed.
It was a complete performance from Stoinis, who was playing only his second ODI, but the Australian top-order looks fragile without their star batsmen David Warner and Steve Smith. Skipper Matthew Wade is unlikely to recover in time for the second ODI and the onus now falls on Finch, Shaun Marsh and Peter Handscomb as Australia are in dire need of forcing a decider in this series.
On the other hand, New Zealand will be without Martin Guptill, who has suffered a hamstring injury for today's clash. Kane Williamson, who failed to convert a good start into big one on Monday, will be looking to lead the unit and take the series as early as tomorrow. Comeback men Ross Taylor and Broom are capable of providing solid support as well. The Black Caps bowling looks solid as well Boult and Southee leading the attack along with Lockie Ferguson and Mitchell Santner providing enough variety to trouble their Trans-Tasman rivals.
