The National University of Singapore (NUS) was named the world's fourth most international university by Times Higher Education on Wednesday. The ranking chart is led by two Swiss universities: ETH Zurich – Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich; and the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne. The University of Hong Kong is in the third spot. The rest in the top 10 list includes Imperial College London (fifth), followed by University of Oxford, Australian National University, University of Cambridge, University College London. The London School of Economics and Political Science is in the tenth place.

The survey released a list of 150 universities across the globe which are judged based on the university's proportion of international students, international staff and journal publications with at least one international co-author. NUS had also previously emerged No 1 in Asia in the Times Higher Education Asia University Rankings 2016.

In a press statement, NUS President Professor Tan Chorh Chuan said: "We are pleased to be placed fourth in the world in THE's ranking of The World's Most International Universities 2017. This is a strong recognition of our global approach to education and research with a focus on Asian perspectives and expertise, as well as the active role we play in international academic and research networks."

He also highlighted how eight in 10 NUS undergraduates "have a significant study abroad experience, including participating in semester-long student exchange programs in more than 300 partner universities in over 40 countries."

"As the majority of our students are Singaporeans, they benefit greatly from the unique diversity of learning opportunities that NUS can provide as one of the most international universities in the world," Tan said, according to the Straits Times.

"In short, to enhance learning outcomes, we bring our students to the world, and we bring the world of learning to our students in Singapore. This is very important for Singapore as we are a small country with extensive trading ties around the globe and home to many companies with multinational operations," he added.
