Malaysian police detained a married couple and seized 182 kilograms of ganja worth about RM 540,000 in two raids around Jelutong in George Town on Thursday.
The Bukit Aman Special Tactical Intelligence Narcotics Group (Sting) team, along with the Penang narcotics department, detained a 37-year-old man at a car park of a condominium in Jelutong, at 12.30pm.
A police source said when they were checking the man, they found ganja and further investigations led to a raid at his condominium unit and arrested his 30-year-old wife.
"Police found nearly 8kg of ganja hidden in a room of the house. The suspects then took police to a parking lot in a residential area near the condominium where 91kg of ganja was hidden in a car that was parked there," the police source told Bernama.
The first raid was followed by another one in another house in Kampung Dodol which is believed to have been used by the couple to store drugs. The police found about 83kg of ganja worth RM 240,000 from the second house.
"The couple who tested positive for drugs will be remanded to facilitate investigations under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952," the source added.
Inspector-General of Police Khalid Abu Bakar confirmed the arrests through his official Twitter account. "Congratulations to Sting PDRMsia, detained two people and seized more than 182kg of ganja in Jelutong, Penang #GoPDRMgo," he said.
