Overview
Malaysia take on China in the final of the BWF World Junior Mixed Team Championships final in Bilbao, Spain on 6 November.
The Malaysian unit, who finished fifth last year, made their way past Thailand in the semi-final on Saturday. This is also the first time the Southeast Asian nation are in the final of the tournament since their title-winning campaign in 2011.
On Saturday, Malaysia's mixed doubles pairing of Ooi Zi Heng and Tan Koong Le opened the semi-final by taking the first game against Thailand's Pakin Kuna-Anuvit and Ruethaichanok Laisuan. However, the Thai shuttlers came back from behind and sealed the the next two games 22-20, 21-12 to open their account in the semi-final.
However, Malaysia won the next three matchups without dropping a game to send a strong signal to their finalists. Lee Zii Jia won his Men's singles tie against Wongcharoen Kantaphon without breaking a sweat.
Promising youngster Goh Jin Wei, who will defend her Women's World Junior title in the upcoming week, made light work of Pornpawee Chochuwong in the Women's singles tie after which the Men's doubles pairing of Chen Tang Jie and Man Wei Chong made it an unassailable 3-1.
"We are very happy. For many years we have not been in the final and I think our team played tremendously tonight as they did against Indonesia," Malaysia Team Manager Syed Abu Bakar was quoted as saying by the tournament's official website.
"I think it's 40-60 but, who knows, if we have good form tomorrow night, we might be able to do it. We will need to win both singles and we will prepare to give our best."
On the other hand, badminton powerhouse China are eyeing their 11th junior team title and have not dropped a set in the final stages of the tournament. They defeated Japan 3-0 in the last-four clash after crushing Chinese Taipei in the quarter-final.
Malaysia will have to come up with their best to stand a chance against the rampant Chinese shuttlers. They will once again rely on their best bet Goh Jin and the Men's doubles pair to make a mark in the big final.
