Major League Soccer side LA Galaxy have confirmed Steven Gerrard will leave the club after the midfielder decided against extending his contract, which is set to expire at the end of the next month.
The 36-year-old made a switch to America after he left his boyhood club Liverpool as a free agent after the end of the 2014/15 campaign. He signed a pre-contract agreement with the MLS outfit and joined them in July of that year.
During his time at LA Galaxy, Gerrard failed to help his side win the MLS Cup. In his 18 months at the club, the former England international has managed five goals and registered 14 assists in 34 appearances.
A statement on the LA Galaxy's official website read, "The LA Galaxy announced today that midfielder Steven Gerrard will not return to the LA Galaxy for the 2017 MLS season. Gerrard departs from LA following the conclusion of his contract in Major League Soccer."
Gerrard has expressed his disappointment after he failed to guide LA Galaxy to a silverware during his time at the club. However, he went on to thank his teammates, coaching staff and the fans as he looks forward towards a new chapter in his life.
"When I left Liverpool, I came to Los Angeles with the goal of helping the Galaxy lift another MLS Cup," Gerrard posted on his official Instagram page.
"I am of course disappointed to have not achieved that objective, but I can look back at my time at the club with pride at what we accomplished, including two straight playoff appearances and countless memorable moments on the pitch.
"As someone who spent the whole of their career in Liverpool, it has been an incredible experience to come to Los Angeles and play for the LA Galaxy.
"I would like to thank Mr. Anschutz, Dan Beckerman, Chris Klein and Bruce Arena for this opportunity. I would also like to thank my teammates, the coaching staff, all of the support staff and most importantly the fans for their fantastic support during my time at Galaxy; I am excited to see this league and this great club continue to grow.
"I am now looking forward to spending time with my family as I consider the next stage of my career."
