Uefa have confirmed that Liverpool defender Mamadou Sakho for he failed a drug test.
The centre-back has not been handed any suspension and can continue to play for the Reds. However, the Merseyside club have decided to not make the France international available for team selection during the course of the investigation.
"Yesterday, Friday 22nd April 2016, a formal communication was received from UEFA stating that they are investigating a possible anti-doping rule violation by Mamadou Sakho. The player will respond to UEFA on the matter," a statement read on Liverpool's official website.
"The player is currently not subject to any playing suspension. However, the club, in consultation with the player, has decided that while this process is followed the player will not be available for selection for matches. There will be no further comment at this time."
Sakho was the part of the side which eliminated Manchester United in the Europa League quarter-final. It is believed that the former Paris Saint-Germain player was tested positive for a type of a fat burner.
In addition to this, he scored in Liverpool's 4-3 victory over Borussia Dortmund in the second leg of the Europa League. That helped Jurgen Klopp's side eliminate the Bundesliga outfit qualify for the last four of the competition.
Liverpool were forced to settle for a 2-2 draw against Newcastle United after the Magpies came from behind to walk away from Anfield with a point. It was the first match Sakho missed after his failed drug test and Klopp has refused to blame his absence for the Reds' latest draw.
"That's not a reason. We have changed a lot in the last few games," Liverpool manager told Sky Sports.
"Playing like we did in the first half is not easy so we did really well, but at half-time they had nothing to lose and we conceded twice, but we could have scored again.
"It was an intense game and we did well against a team who are fighting for their lives in the Premier League."
