Manchester United have completed the signing of Everton star Romelu Lukaku on Monday and Jose Mourinho has taken a dig at his former club Chelsea.
The Red Devils had agreed a deal with the Merseyside club for the striker on Saturday, which was subjected to his medical and agreeing personal terms. He has now successfully completed his medical and also agreed personal terms with United.
Prior to the fee being agreed, the 24-year-old was heavily linked with a return to Chelsea, three years after leaving Stamford Bridge on a permanent transfer. The west London club even matches United's £75 million fee, which did not make a difference for the Old Trafford club in the end.
If reports were to be believed, the Blues manager Antonio Conte made Lukaku his priority signing of the summer transfer window. However, he snubbed advances from his former club and signed a five-year deal with United, with an option to further extend it by a year.
A statement on United's official website read, "Manchester United is delighted to announce the signing of Romelu Lukaku from Everton on a five-year contract, with an option to extend for a further year."
After Chelsea missed out on the opportunity of signing Lukaku, Mourinho wasted no time in heaping praise of the Belgium international. The former Inter Milan and Real Madrid manager claims "it is only natural" for the striker to continue his development at the "biggest club."
"Romelu is a natural fit for Manchester United. He is a big personality and a big player. It is only natural that he wants to develop his career at the biggest club," Mourinho was quoted as saying by the club's official website.
"He will be a great addition to the group and I know they will make him very welcome. I am really looking forward to working with him again."
Lukaku's switch to Old Trafford means he will reunite with Mourinho. The pair worked together at Chelsea and it was the latter who sold the striker to Everton for £28 million in 2014, a year after allowing him to join them on loan.
