James Mattis, the US Secretary of Defence, on Saturday issued a strong warning to North Korea stating that any attack on the US or its allies will bring about a massive military response capable of destroying Pyongyang. Mattis also added that North Korea's missile and nuclear program is no match for the alliance between South Korea and the US. Mattis made these remarks during his visit to Seoul to conduct diplomatic talks with his South Korean counterpart, Song Young-moo.
A powerful warning to North Korea
"Make no mistake. Any attack on the United States or our allies will be defeated. Use of nuclear weapons by the North will be met with a massive military response that is effective and overwhelming," said Mattis.
The US Secretary of Defence added that Washington does not accept North Korea if it possesses nuclear power.
According to Mattis, North Korea has accelerated the threat that it poses to the entire world by its blind nuclear ambitions. He made it clear that the illegal and unnecessary missile and nuclear weapons programs have destabilized the peace in the peninsula. Mattis added that it is necessary to strengthen the U.S.-South Korean military and diplomatic collaboration to maintain peace in the world.
The comments from Mattis came just days before Trump's visit to South Korea. During his trip to Seoul on November 6-7, Donald Trump is expected to deliver a speech at the South Korean Parliament, explaining his tactics on the Korean peninsula. He will also visit the US military camp in South Korea and conduct talks with top military officials.
North Korea continues provocation
The United States and its allies believe that North Korea is slowly emerging as a real threat to the entire human community. Tensions in the peninsula escalated when Kim Jong-un's country conducted sixth nuclear missile test capable to shower a rain of devastation on the US mainland.
In the meantime, Donald Trump and Kim Jong-un started trading threats of war, and at one point of time, Trump openly called Kim, the 'rocket man', and added that 'only one thing will work' with Pyongyang. Many experts believe that Trump was referring to a possible military action with that 'one thing'.
