Overview
Indian Aces take on Singapore Slammers in the final of IPTL 2016 in Hyderabad on 11 December.
The Aces emerged on top of the standings after dominating over the three legs, in which they won won five matches and 189 games. Unlike the other teams, who had poor campaigns in at least one of the legs, the India-based team was consistent.
Aces' mixed doubles pairing of Sania Mirza and Rohan Bopanna have been on top of their game so far in the season. The top-ranked Women's doubles player's association with Ivan Dodig has also worked well for the team. Kirsten Flipkens, despite starting the India leg on a poor note, got back to form with a win over Ana Ivanovic in the Women's singles against UAE Royals' in their 20-24 defeat.
Feliciano Lopez and Dodig have combined well in the Men's doubles category as well while the former has come up with good performances in singles sets as well. The doubles pairing will be key to Aces' success on Sunday.
Despite finishing on top, the Aces trial Slammers (201) in the number of games won by 12. Also the Singapore team have conceded four games lesser than the hosts (183). Slammers have been largely benefited by Kiki Bertens, who has lost only two sets out of the nine she has played this season.
Carlos Moya has been solid and contributed to Slammers' success. Marcelo Melo and Bertens have done well in the mixed doubles category as well. The defending champions after having a poor opening leg in Japan, hit peak form in Singapore to finish second behind the Aces.
While they have not won against Aces this season in their last three meetings, the in-form Slammers, who demolished Japan Warriors on Saturday, would not want to miss the golden opportunity to defend their title. A good final battle is also vital for a tournament that has been marred by financial issues and lack of big names.
