Overview

India take on England in the second of the five-match Test series in Visakhapatnam from 17 November.

The hosts, who have strolled past South Africa and New Zealand at home in their last two series found it difficult to open the ongoing series on a high against Alastair Cook's men, who came up with a resilient show in Rajkot after their humiliating defeat in Bangladesh last month.

While the Rajkot track was not a rank turner as it used to be in the previous home series for India, Cook' men made the most of the batting friendly conditions and drop catches on the opening day after winning the crucial toss.

Spinners Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja and Amit Mishra were less effective on a track that had a fair amount of grass, which irked the Indian skipper Virat Kohli, who had wanted to put England on the back foot from the word go.

Contrary to expectations, four England batsmen including skipper Cook smashed centuries in the first Test, in which India battled hard in the fourth innings to prevent a defeat.

Visakhapatnam turf might not be as friendly as Rajkot was to the English batsmen and Ashwin and Jadeja will likely get back into play in the second Test. However, the Englishmen will be confident of facing the Indian attack after spending quality time at the crease in the first Test.

It will be interesting to see how skipper Kohli, who has not tasted defeat since 2014, will bounce back after an uninspiring performance. The return of Lokesh Rahul at the top of the order comes a boost to the team. Whether or not India persist with the five-bowler theory remains to be seen.
