Overview

Dhaka Dynamites take on Khulna Titans in the Qualifier 1 of Bangladesh Premier League 2016/17 on 6 December in Dhaka. The hosts succumbed to a six-wicket defeat to Khulna in the last group game of the season on Sunday, which allowed the latter to leapfrog Chittagong Vikings and Rajshahi Kings to the second spot on the league table. Shakib Al Hasan-led side rested two of their key players in Andre Russell and Dwayne Bravo as they had already sealed their spot in the playoffs before yesterday's game.

Former Sri Lanka skipper Kumar Sangakkara helped Dhaka reach 158 in 20 overs with 51-ball 59. However, a solid knock from Khulna captain Mahmudullah (50) along with contributions from the top-order saw them secure an important victory.

Khulna also defeated Dhaka in their earlier group game on 19 November, which one again had Mahmudullah leading from the front with the bat. However, nothing much can be drawn from their previous meetings as Shakib's side have the firepower to decimate any opposition on their day.

Mehedi Maruf, Sangakkara and Mosaddek Hossain have amassed runs consistently in the ongoing season. With the likes of quality all-rounders, including skipper Shakib, Bravo and Russell, Dhaka are the top-contenders for the 2016/17 title.

On the other hand, Khulna batting is heavily reliant on skipper Mahmudullah, who has collected 369 runs at an average of 36.90 in the tournament. However, they have two quality pace bowlers - Shafiul Islam and Pakistan's Junaid Khan - who are among the top-five wicket-takers and have shared 35 scalps between them so far.

While Khulna will be hoping for a team effort on Tuesday, Dhaka will just need one of their superstars to step up on the big day. Nevertheless, both teams have a second chance to make it to the final but neither of them would want to take it.
