Crystal Palace have confirmed they have completed a deal in bringing Andros Townsend from Newcastle United to Selhurst Park on 1 July, Friday.
The England international joined the Tyneside club from Tottenham Hotspur earlier in the January transfer window. However, he could not help the Magpies avoid being relegated to the Championship, which has forced him to find a new club.
Townsend will return to the Premier League after he signed a new deal with the Eagles. He signed a five-year deal with Palace and the London outfit will pay a fee of £13m to Newcastle.
"Crystal Palace have made their first signing of the summer with England winger Andros Townsend putting pen to paper on a five-year-deal for a fee of £13 million," a statement read on Palace's official website.
The 24-year-old is Palace's first addition to the squad of the summer transfer window. Club chairman Steve Parish was delighted that his side were able to secure the services of the winger.
"It's fantastic that we've managed to get a player of Andros' quality into the Club. He has played in the Premier League for a number of years and represented England on many occasions and yet he's still only 24-years-old," Parish explained.
"Andros is another exciting attacking talent that we have added to our ranks and I can't wait to see him in a red and blue shirt in the very near future."
Townsend revealed that it was a difficult decision to leave Newcastle. However, one he made up his mind, the former Spurs man admitted that it was an easy decision to accept an opportunity to join Palace.
"I'm extremely delighted. I had chats with the manager and chairman before I signed and I'm pleased to a part of Crystal Palace's future. By the sounds of things it's going to be a bright one and I can't wait to get started," Townsend told Palace's official website.
"I've known of the interest for a couple of weeks. It was an extremely difficult decision to leave Newcastle and it took me about a month or so, but when I decided that I wanted to go it was about finding the best opportunity for me at this stage of my career.
"It was a pretty easy decision to choose Crystal Palace because of the direction they're heading. They play a system that suits wingers and you only need to look at Wilfried Zaha, Yannick Bolasie and Jason Puncheon to see how they've excelled and how influential they are for Palace. I want to be a part of that and help this club reach its potential."
