Singapore's national water agency PUB said on Sunday that water sport activities in Marina Reservoir has been halted after a creature resembling a crocodile was sighted in the waters near the Sports Hub. A PUB spokesperson said the Singapore Dragon Boat Association, Sports Hub and People's Association have all suspended activities in Marina Reservoir.
On Sunday, the Singapore Dragon Boat Association posted on Facebook that it will stop all dragon boat activities in Marina Reservoir indefinitely. It also added that the Kallang Water Sports Centre and the Kallang Dragon Boat Nursery will also remain closed with immediate effect.
The researchers from the National University of Singapore were contacted by PUB to identify the creature. "Preliminary findings indicate that it is likely to be a monitor lizard," the spokesperson told Channel NewsAsia.
PUB also warned that people who will continue with activities in the reservoir to exercise should be cautious and asked them not to immerse in the waters. They have also been asked not to go near the creature if spotted in the waters.
The Marina Reservoir area in Singapore is popular for activities like dragon boating and canoeing.
Members of the public should report any sightings of the crocodile with photos and videos, PUB said. People can also phone in the information at 1800-2255-782, the agency said.
