Overview
Lewis Hamilton took the pole position for the 2016 Brazilian Grand Prix by setting the pace in the qualifying race that the Autodromo Jose Carlos Pace circuit on 12 November.
The Brit edged out his Mercedes teammate Nico Rosberg in a closely-fought battle by just 0.102s. With only 19 points separating the two in the Driver Standings, both the drivers will start Sunday's race from the front row of the grid.
Hamilton, who has been in good form after clinching the last two races of the season at the United States and Mexico needs a win to remain in contention for the driver championship and take the battle to the final race of the season at Abu Dhabi.
On a day when there was a hint of rain, Hamilton was at his best from Q1 to Q3 to claim his 60th career pole, which is eight short of Michael Schumacher's record. It was also a record 19th pole in 20 races for Mercedes, who have already clinched the constructor championship.
"This is the best that I could have hoped for really coming to Brazil. I think this is only my second pole here. It's always a track that I've struggled at, so I'm really happy to be up at the front," Hamilton said, as quoted by the Formula One official website.
While the Mercedes drivers continued their domination, Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen and Red Bull's Max Verstappen finished third and fourth, respectively.
Also, Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel and Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo will start from the third row of the grid. Haas driver Romain Grosjean finished seventh while Force India drivers Nico Hulkenberg and Sergio Perez along with Fernando Alonso occupied the last three spots.
Williams' home driver Felipe Massa, who has won in Brazil twice before, finished 13th.
