Overview
Bangladesh host England in the second One Day International of the three-match series at the Shere Bangla National Stadium, Mirpur on 9 October.
The visitors came up with a solid batting performance and equally good show with the ball to snatch a 21-run win on Friday. Stand-in captain Jos Buttler had no reservations about batting first in Mirpur. However, the visitors were made to regret the decision in the first 15 overs as quick wickets pegged them back.
Debutant Ben Duckett though showed remarkable grit and stitched a 153-run stand with Ben Stokes, who went on to score his maiden century to steady the England innings. Skipper Buttler joined the action after the 21-year-old's dismissal and smashed a quickfire 63 off just 38 balls including four sixes to take his side's total past the 300-run mark.
In reply, Bangladesh started well and rode on solid performances from their opener Imrul Kayes, who went on to make a century, and all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan, who came up with a 79-run blinder. However, they lost their last six wickets for just 17 runs as another English debutant Jake Ball ran riot with a five-wicket haul.
Bangladesh have no time to get back into their groove as Sunday's ODI is a do-or-die situation for them. England are in a good position to end the hosts' brilliant run at home which began in 2014 and saw the Tigers defeat Pakistan, India and South Africa.
Mashrafe Mortaza's men were outclassed by an England unit, that had a lot of firepower. The hosts were struggling with their fifth-bowling option after their regulars were taken apart by Stokes and Buttler. Six overs from part-timers Mahmudullah and Mosharraf Hossain cost them 47 runs while Shaiful Islam and Taskin Ahmed struggled to complete their full quota of overs.
England, on the other hand, used six bowlers to good effect, with Adil Rashid, Moeen Ali and Ball bowling between them the maximum number of overs. The off-spinner and the leg-spinner bowled well in pairs and kept the Bangladesh batsmen at check in a tense chase.
Bangladesh should back themselves to score big as the England unit has big-hitters who can take the game away in a matter of few overs. A better performance from their top-order batsmen would certainly come in handy. Lack of an extra specialist spinner might also cut down the hosts' advantage but Mahmudullah and youngster Mossadek Hossain need to step up and support Shakib to help to put a choke on the run flow.
The cricket fans in Bangladesh have been used to seeing their team topple big sides in the recent past. Mortaza's men will be motivated to not let the series slip away and take the fight it to the decider on Wednesday.
However, the final scorecard on Sunday might turn out to be a tough sight for the fans to digest if England continue their fearless, aggressive brand of cricket.
