Overview
Australia host South Africa in the second of the three-match Test series at the Bellerive Oval, Hobart from 12 November.
The hosts suffered a serious blow in the opening Test of the series losing in Perth by 177 runs. Despite gaining a slender first innings-lead of two runs, Australia had no answers to solid batting performances from Dean Elgar and JP Duminy, who scored a century each.
Boosted by helpful contributions from the tail-enders, South Africa set a 539-run target to the Australians, who never looked like achieving it.
Even in the absence of bowling spearhead Dale Steyn, who was injured during the first innings, South Africa were able to clinch a comfortable victory, thanks to Kagiso Rabada and Vernon Philander, who stepped up with some wonderful reverse swing bowling with the old ball, which the Australians were not able to do.
It will once again be a test of character for Steve Smith and his team, who are on the brink of losing their second consecutive Test series following a 3-0 whitewash in Sri Lanka earlier this year.
Hobart Test will be do-or-die situation for the hosts, who have lost Shaun Marsh, Adam Voges and Peter Siddle to injuries. Callum Ferguson and Joe Burns are likely to replace the two batsmen, while Joe Mennie will join Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood in the pace battery, which will be hoping for a better performance this time.
Australia have been over-reliant on their top-order as David Warner, Usman Khawaja and Steve Smith have done the bulk of scoring for them in the recent past. South Africa once again will aim for the "head of the snake", which they successfully did in Perth.
While the South African batting line-up looks good to pile up runs again, the onus is on the Australian unit, especially their middle order, to deliver in a crunch situation.
