Murray, who kickstarted his run to the top of ATP rankings last year with a runner-up finish at the French Open, has not had a good season so far on clay with early exits at Monte Carlo Masters, Madrid Masters and a shock first-round exit at Rome Masters last month.
The Scot was tested in his first two rounds in the ongoing tournament as well, but the comfortable win over dangerous Del Potro should give Murray the much-needed confidence ahead of tougher tests. One such is his tricky fourth-round clash against Khachanov, who has had a solid season on the dirt.
The 21-year-old made light work of world number 13 Tomas Berdych 7-5, 6-4, 6-4 in the second round before ending Isner's run in the tournament. The tall youngster, known for his booming serves, has not faced Murray yet in his career, but the meeting comes at the right time for him as the Scot has been struggling on clay.
Apart from his impressive wins in the ongoing tournament, Khachanov also reached the quarter-final in Barcelona, beating Pablo Cuevas and David Goffin enroute. With Murray known for his impeccable returns, the big-serving Russian has his task cut out, but he has the skills to test the numero uno.
