Overview
Al Ahed host Al-Muharraq in the quarter-final of the 2016 AFC Cup at the Camille Chamoun Sports City Stadium on 14 September.
The Promise have lived up to their reputation of being a dominant side in the Lebanese Premier League over the years with a good run at the AFC Cup following a three-year absence. The Lebanese side lost their first game 2-0 to Altyn Asyr (Turkmenistan) but buckled up with four successive wins which included a 3-0 drubbing of their opening clash opponents.
After topping Group A with four wins from six matches, Al Ahed were pitched against Al Wahda in the Round of 16 clash. They successfully outclassed their Syrian opponents 4-0 to book their quarter-final berth. While Abbas Ali Atwi put them in front in the first half, Abdelrazaq Al Hussain and Senegal Mamadou Drame complete the rout against Al Wahda in the second half.
Bahraini giants Muharraq have been in phenomenal form in the ongoing AFC Cup. The 2008 edition champions topped Group D with five wins from six matches. The Red Wolf have been solid in the back conceding only three goals so far in the tournament.
With an 81st minute goal from Brazilian striker Kanu, Muharraq piped their Round of 16 opponents Al Faisaly (Jordan) at the Bahrain National Stadium.
Muharraq, the 33-time winner of the Bahraini Premier League, would want to bring in their big-match experience on Wednesday. An away win in the first leg would give them a lot of confidence for making the progress in the tournament.
On the other hand, Al Ahed would be banking on their front-line, which contributed to 18 goals over seven games in the tournament, to deliver against their quarter-final opponents. But their defense which proved to be leaky during the group stages would be an area of concern for the hosts.
