Zhang will be familiar to the conditions at the Singapore Indoor Stadium as she had been representing the Republic before she made the switch to United States in 2013 following a fallout between herself and then Singapore singles coach Luan Ching.
Also, the world number 13 stunned higher-ranked He Bingjiao of China in her quarter-final outing 21-10, 25-33 on Friday. Having avenged her German Open defeat to Yamaguchi yesterday, the 2016 French Open runner-up will be upbeat about her chances of winning a title on her former home turf, but she is up against Tai, who is looking unstoppable since her Hong Kong Open win last year.
Tai went on win the World Superseries Finals last year and has started the new season with titles at All England and in Malaysia last week. Having decimated the likes of Carolina Marin and Ratchanok Intanon in the title matches this season, the world number has been in a league of her own and has rarely been challenged.
With the possibility of Singapore crowd rallying behind her, Zhang will be striving to give her best, but Tai's deception and intensity is likely to be too hot to handle for the United States shuttler today.
