Overview

Australia's chances of levelling the series in Napier went down the drain as the second One Day International of the three-match series was cancelled due to wet outfield on Thursday. Despite rain only delaying the play, the outfield was not fit for even a shortened-match, Australia's stand-in captain Aaron Finch reportedly revealed.

The series now stands 1-0 in New Zealand's favour as Kane Williamson's men clinched a thriller in the first ODI by only five runs. The hosts have given themselves a good chance to regain the Chappell-Hadlee trophy which they conceded to Australia late last year after losing a three-match One Day International series 3-0 on the road.

Finch's men though would want to forget the Auckland heart-break and start afresh on Sunday. Notably, if they manage to draw the series 1-1 by clinching a win, they will still retain the Chappell-Hadlee trophy. However, they have to considerably improve their performance with the bat as the batting line-up looks fragile without David Warner and Steve Smith.

With Matthew Wade ruled out, skipper Finch needs to step up along with experienced campaigner Shaun Marsh. If they get a good start, the Men in Yellow have the firepower in the middle order in the likes of in-form Marcus Stoinis and Glenn Maxwell to post a big total.

On the other hand, Martin Guptill, who suffered a niggle in the first ODI, continues to be in doubt for the clash. However, the New Zealand batting line-up looks settled with the likes of Kane Williamson, Ross Taylor and Neil Broom. With one hand on the trophy already, the Black Caps are also expected to bring in Ish Sodhi, who will partner with Mitchell Santner, to make use of the spinner-friendly conditions in Hamilton.
