Overview

PV Sindhu has spent only an hour and seven minutes on court over her first three rounds in the ongoing Syed Modi Grand Prix Gold tournament in India. The top seed has crushed her opponents, all of them Indians, and has not dropped a game yet.

The Rio Games silver medallist, who is playing her first international tournament of the 2017 season, looked at ease against unseeded compatriot Vaidehi Choudhari, ranked 600 places below Sindhu at 609, in the quarter-final on Friday. Ever since Saina Nehwal, who won the Malaysia Masters earlier this month, withdrew ahead of the ongoing tournament, the 23-year-old has been the clear favourite to win the title and she has lived up to the expectation so far.

On Saturday, Sindhu will face Indonesian teenager Fitriani Fitriani, who went down against Saina in the quarter-final of Malaysia Masters. The 18-year-old played a marathon quarter-final yesterday against lower-ranked Indian shuttler Rituparna Das, clinching it 21-17, 13-21, 23-21. She also faced a tough first-round battle against unseeded Rasika Raje that went to the decider but was comfortable against another unseeded local player Ira Sharma in the next round.

Fitriani has been steadily climbing the BWF ladder since she defeated former World Junior Champion Goh Jin Wei last year to clinch the Orleans International tournament. The world number 31 has been reaching the final stages of Grand Prix tournaments and will be eager to take on one of the most dangerous Women's singles shuttlers in the globe on Saturday.

However, it is unlikely that Sindhu, who has spent nearly an hour less than her opponent in the ongoing tournament, will be tested. While the top seed will be looking for a win in straight games, Fitriani will be hoping to put up a stiff fight and take the match to the decider.
