Overview
While Roger Federer is showing glimpses of his vintage past at the Melbourne Arena, Rafael Nadal is going about announcing his comeback in his own style. Two straights sets victory in the opening rounds and a marathon win against German teenager Alexander Zverev followed by a four-setter victory against Gael Monfils.
Coming back from an injury that cut-short his 2016 season, the world number nine has been looking solid and the early exits of top seeds Andy Murray and Novak Djokovic has brightened his chances. However, he will face a big test against Milos Raonic, who beat the Spaniard earlier this month in the quarter-final of Brisbane Open.
Raonic, who is currently the highest seed in the tournament, dispatched off another Spaniard Roberto Bautista Agut in a four-setter on Monday. The Canadian, who is eyeing his first Grand Slam, showcased his class with booming serves that won him 33 aces.
Despite losing six times to Nadal in the past, Raonic has done well to better his record in the recent past by winning the last two of his three games. Against the left-hander, who has played nine sets in his last two rounds on return from injury, the in-form world number three will fancy his chances.
However, Nadal, who has not progressed beyond the last-eight stages in his last two seasons, will be hoping to go the distance in Melbourne this year. And the 14-time Grand Slam champion seems to know what will help him break his quarter-final jinx.
"I need to be very focused with my serve and play aggressive. If I am not playing aggressive, then I am dead, because he [Raonic] plays aggressive," Nadal said, as quoted by the ESPN.
