Overview

Top seed Ng Ka Long faced a stiff test against Indonesian teenager Jonatan Christie in the quarter-final on Friday. The world number nine conceded the first game but clawed back to win the match 13-21, 21-15, 21-16 in 51 minutes.

The 22-year-old has been making steady progress in the recent past and claimed his first Superseries title last year at the Hong Kong Open after which he clinched a win against higher-ranked Son Wan Ho at the Dubai Superseries Finals. Ng has carried his good form into the season's first Grand Prix Gold where he has just dropped one game across his four matches so far.

Ng will be up against another promising Indonesian shuttler, Anthony Ginting, in the semi-final on Saturday. The 20-year-old stunned higher-ranked Ajay Jayaram in just 28 minutes and is looking resolute to make it big in the ongoing tournament.

Apart from Jayaram, the 40th-ranked shuttler has also outclassed Chong Wei Feng and Khosit Phetpradad in his earlier rounds. Notably, the Indonesian youngster lost to all the three shuttlers last year. Also, Ginting has the knack of causing upsets in high-pressure situations as he stunned reigning Olympic champion Chen Long in the quarter-final of 2016 Australian Open.

While Ng remains favourite to win the clash, Ginting, who had defeated the Hong Kong shuttler at the Badminton Asia Team Championships in 2016, has it in him to cause an upset at Sibu on Saturday.

The winner of this clash will take on Lee Hyun II, who defeated Tommy Sugiarto in straight games in the first semi-final, on Sunday in the title clash.
