Overview
Six-time Junior World champions Germany take on Belgium in the semi-final of 2016 Hockey Junior World Cup in the North Indian state of Uttar Pradesh on 16 December.
The defending champions made light work of England (4-2) in their quarter-final clash on Thursday. Two goals on either side of the break made sure they were able to maintain the lead even when the Pool D runners-up struck twice in the second half to take the fight to the European giants.
While Jan Schiffer and Lukas Windfeder scored in the first half, Florian Scholten and Timm Herzbruch's goals sealed it for Germany in the second half. The defending champions have so far been the most impressive side in the ongoing tournament scoring 14 goals over four matches and have conceded only five.
Herzbruch, the 19-year-old who won a bronze with the German team at Rio Olympics, has scored for the Germans in every single outing and has found good support Anton Boeckel, who has scored four goals so far.
On the other hand, Belgium survived in a thrilling battle against Argentina in their quarter-final clash on Thursday. They were trialing the South American nation 1-0 until the 69th minute when Victor Wegnez struck a remarkable equaliser.
Belgium then sealed the game 4-1 in the shoot-out after the game finished 1-1 in the regulation time. The Pool B winners will take confidence from the way they were able to bounce back from a crunch position on Thursday.
The Red Lions have displayed solid defensive discipline in the ongoing tournament as they have conceded only three goals so far. However, it will be a tough test for them against the rampant Germans, who have not put a foot wrong in their quest for their seventh title.
