Overview
Malaysian shuttler Daren Liew will have a shot at Korea Masters 2016 glory when he takes on local hope Son Wan Ho in the Men's singles final on 11 December.
The unseeded shuttler has been in good nick, reaching the Chinese Taipei Masters and Thailand Open in October and has carried his form into the ongoing tournament, which is also the final Grand Prix Gold of 2016.
Liew had an easy outing against an unseeded Taiwanese shuttler Chun Wei Chen in the semi-final as he needed only 32 minutes to clinch the match 21-13, 21-7. The 29-year-old was at his best when he disposed off fifth seed local shuttler Lee Dong Keun in the quarter-final in straight games.
The Malaysian shuttler's biggest achievement came at the 2012 French Open Superseries when he defeated Viktor Axelsen in the final to clinch the title. There has not been a lot of success till then and the world number 67, who had broken into the top 10 in 2012, would want to claw back and also end his year-long title drought.
On the other hand, Son has looked unstoppable in his home tournament so far. The top seeded shuttler will be motivated to head into the Dubai World Superseries Finals with a title under his belt, especially after a series of disappointing results in Superseries tournament since his early exit at Rio Olympics.
Son has won all his previous rounds in the ongoing tournament in straight games and the pattern continued when he disposed off Indian shuttler Parupalli Kashyap 23-21, 21-16 in 49 minutes on Saturday. The South Korean shuttler, who has a 3-1 head-to-head advantage over Liew, will be favourites to win the title when he takes the court in front of his home crowd on Sunday.
