Overview
PV Sindhu will take on Tai Tzu Ying in the Women's singles final of 2016 Hong Kong Open in Kowloon on 27 November.
The world number nine, who had clinched a silver medal at the Rio Olympics earlier this year, had been without a Superseries title until last week. However, on Sunday, she will be battling for her second title with Taiwanese shuttler Ying after clinching her maiden title earlier this month in China.
Sindhu was at her best on Saturday in the semi-final against local hope Cheung Ngan Yi, outclassing her in straight games - 21-14, 21-16. The unseeded Indian shuttler has so far had it easy except for her quarter-final clash against Singapore's Xiaoyu Liang, who took the battle to the decider before going down 17-21, 23-21, 18-21.
It will all come down to how much more Sindhu can offer on the big day. Playing more than seven matches in two week's time will have its impact on the Indian shuttler, who had draining battles in the final stages of China Open as well.
Sindhu, who has made it to the World Superseries Finals in Dubai would want to enter the year-ending tournament on a high.
On the other hand, Ying was at her dominant best against top seed Carolina Marin in their semi-final on Saturday. Despite leading 15-12 in the decider, the reigning Olympic champion succumbed to a late burst from the fourth seed Taiwanese shuttler, who took the match 21-17, 14-21, 21-16.
While Ying reached her second final in little over a month, Marin ended the year without winning a Superseries title. However, the world number three from Taiwan has not been able to get past the hurdles in the final stages.
In Denmark Open, last month, Ying lost the final against Japan's Akane Yamaguchi and she exited Korea Open and French Open in the quarter-final stages. In China, last week, the Taiwanese shuttler slipped in the semi-final against local shuttler Sun Yu in straight games.
Ying would want to get the monkey off her back before she heads to Dubai next month. She holds a 4-3 head-to-head advantage over Sindhu as well.
The fourth seed would also be gunning for revenge against the Indian shuttler, who knocked her out of the Women's singles campaign in the Rio Games.
