A 5.3 magnitude undersea earthquake struck Japan off the coast of Ibaraki prefecture, south of Fukushima on Friday night, the US Geological Survey (USGS) said.
The quake struck at about 9.07 pm (8.07 pm Singapore time) at a depth of some 37km.
Although the buildings in Tokyo were shaken by the jolt, but there were no reports of damages or injuries.
The Japan Meteorological Agency said the earthquake did not trigger any tsunami threat.
This is the second earthquake in Japan in a week. A 5.5 magnitude earthquake struck Tokyo on Monday. USGS said the quake's epicentre was close to the site of the 2011 earthquake.
Japan is located at the junction of four tectonic plates and it experiences relatively violent quakes every year.
Reports show that Japan accounts for about 20 percent of the world's earthquakes of magnitude 6 or greater.
